University of Calcutta on January 24, 1857, was situated in Kolkata, West Bengal. It was founded in the pursuance of the dispatch that was sent by the Court of Directors of the East India Company in July 1854 to the Governor-General of India in Council that proposed the formation of the Universities of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay.

In the first instance, the University had followed the pattern of the University of London and slowly and slowly introduced alteration in its structure.
